What’s the timeline to rank your website in Google Top 10?

July 31, 2010 1 comment

One of the most asked SEO query is – “How much time will it take for my website to appear in Google results?” The question seems simple and straightforward for the clients, but for the SEO team, the issue is not as simple. Search engine rankings depend on a large number of factors, which require significant amount of time and efforts. In this blog, we’ve pulled together the factors that influence the timeline for your website to appear in search engine results.

Before beginning SEO, what is the position of your website?
If your website does not have any optimization done at all, redoing the process may take a greater chunk of time

Does your site have inbound links?
If your site does not have any inbound links, you will have to wait.  However, if you already have inbound links, updation will speed up the crawling of your website

How recently was your website built?
A brand new site without any links will have to wait for sometime before it is found by Google search engine.

How flexible is your website?
If your website incorporates a content management system, which is open to SEO based changes; your website is likely to have a better ranking.

How competitive is your target phrase?
If you are betting on a highly competitive target phrase, it will take time to appear in search results. You will have to add links, pages, and fresh content regularly to find your place. It is recommended that you go after easier target phrase first, and then transition to a higher stage.

How competitive is your website?
Examine 10 competitor websites closely for target phrase. If your competitor websites rank heavily with thousands of links, it is better to reevaluate your goals or have a very long term plan with consistent efforts to compete.

Moreover, once Google spider crawls your website, you will have to wait for the updated cache to appear in Google’s index. You may also have to wait for some more time for the results to actually appear in search engine rankings.

Facebook overhauls Google’s number of visitors- What could it mean for businesses?

March 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Hitwise, a research firm, recently released stats unveiling an important insight – Facebook overhauled Google and became the most visited site in the US. Like all other numbers, Hitwise’s research results ought to be taken with a pinch of salt. Firstly, they haven’t compared all Google’s web functions such as Maps and Gmail with Facebook, which indicates skewed data. Second, they might have included the number of return visits catapulting Facebook to a higher position as compared to Google.

However, for a website that has spent far less no. of years on the playground, this is certainly a huge achievement. Social media strategies of different businesses may undergo transformation as a result. What was once a pastime for college students may transform into a magnet, attracting serious website traffic. To understand what this could mean for your business, we must first understand the user’s perspective.

Users have different expectations from both the channels. While Google may be more of an instrument of search, Facebook achieves the purpose of connecting with people and developing relationships. Businesses likewise should have different expectations from both channels and similarly different means of approach. If businesses understand how users take their online presence, they will able to meet user expectations more quickly and easily.

What Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is to Google, Social Media Marketing (SMM) is to Facebook. Therefore, which channel or combination of channels work for a business, will depend on the purpose and the target audience. For example, a SMM strategy would work well for an NGO having a social cause rather than a real estate broker as it would be easier to spread the message and draw participation. On the other hand, for a real estate broker direct marketing through ads or increasing the number of visitors through SEO may be more effective. While an NGO may measure success on the basis of awareness it creates among people, a Real Estate broker will typically count the leads generated through the efforts.

Comparing both channels is like comparing apples to oranges. In order to benefit from either channels, you will have to define the strategy that works best for you. That will mostly depend on the success metrics that you decide for your business.

Buzz – a threat to Facebook?

We haven’t forgotten Buzz, or have we? The inception of Buzz attracted media headlines with an immediate user reach of millions of customers. Ideally, if all the Facebook users covert into Google we could see a single dominant platform for all marketers. However, this situation seems almost next to impossible considering Facebook fan base and the widespread love for the social networking website. By introducing Buzz, Google has leaped head on in the social networking pool but will it emerge as a winner?

Has Facebook’s overtaking Google in the number of visitors encouraged you to tweak your social media strategy? Please post your views in the comments section below.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO): News, Articles & Updates

Hello Friends,

I was just going through the SEO updates on the weekend & just came across one word which insist me to explore in more detail and that word is “Zeitgeist”. Yes, me too confused by reading the word & I decided to explore more details about it.

What is Google’s Zeitgeist ?

Google’s Zeitgeist defines the spirit of the times. As we all know, Millions of people across the globe do search on Google for hundreds of queries. Google used to store all this data & now Google is sharing this data so that, we can get some insights from the current search trend going on across the globe.

Google has developed few tools that give insights into global, regional, past and present search trends. These tools gives flexibility to research, explore, and learn from these data. SEO, Webmasters and even Business owner can use it to gain the understanding of search patterns & use them for their benefits.

Few of the tools google has to offer are,

Google Trends:
Enter up to five search terms to see relative popularity over time. It will give you the results based on time frame, regions, cities, languages and relative keywords.

Trends for Websites
Type a website address to see visitors by region and related sites visited. It gives traffic & visitor bifurcation based on Region, cities, related sites, and other search terms used.

Search Insights
Create your own lists of most popular and fastest rising queries for different geographic regions over time and by topic. Data is bifurcated by Top Search queries for that term, Region, Cities and related search terms.

Hot Trends
The top 100 fastest-rising search queries in USA. It gives daily update and very frequently updated through out the day.

I am thinking about the application & the way to use these tools offered by the google for my website. Few things which clicked in my mind are,

  • To Analyze the Keyword Trends which we targeted for the website
  • To Analyze the search volume of the keyword
  • To get insights about the other related websites & keywords that can help me to drive more traffic
